The Best Portable Grills and Coolers for Your Matchday Tailgate

Updated: June 202625 min read

A tailgate is only as successful as the equipment you bring. For international fans attending a match at MetLife Stadium, purchasing or renting the right gear is critical. You cannot simply build an open fire in the parking lot. Understanding what types of portable grills and coolers are allowed—and which are the most efficient—is the first step to hosting a great World Cup tailgate.

Portable Grills: Gas vs. Charcoal

MetLife Stadium permits both small propane gas grills and charcoal grills. However, charcoal requires significantly more logistics. You must bring a metal bucket to safely dispose of the hot coals; dumping coals on the asphalt or in regular trash cans is strictly prohibited and highly dangerous. For convenience, a portable propane grill (like a Coleman RoadTrip) is overwhelmingly preferred. They cool down quickly, allowing you to easily store them in your trunk before heading into the stadium.

Cooler Selection and Ice Management

  • The Rotomolded Cooler:

During a blazing July afternoon, a cheap styrofoam cooler will melt your ice in an hour. Invest in a thick, rotomolded cooler (like a Yeti or an RTIC). They can keep drinks ice-cold for days, even sitting directly on hot asphalt.

  • The Two-Cooler System:

Always separate your food and your drinks. The drink cooler will be opened constantly, letting warm air in. Keep raw meats (burgers, hot dogs) in a dedicated, tightly sealed cooler to prevent foodborne illnesses in the summer heat.

  • Fire Safety:

Deep fryers are strictly banned in the MetLife parking lots. Any open flame must be actively monitored. Ensure you have a small portable fire extinguisher in your vehicle.

If you are flying in from abroad and cannot bring this equipment, consider using a third-party tailgate rental company that will deliver grills and coolers directly to your parking spot on matchday.
