How to Clean Up and Pack Away Your Tailgate Before Kickoff

Updated: June 202625 min read

The final hour before kickoff is the most chaotic part of any tailgate. You have to shut down the grill, dispose of massive amounts of trash, pack your gear into the car, and navigate the long walk to the stadium security gates. Failure to pack away properly can result in stolen gear, environmental fines, or missing the opening ceremonies of the World Cup.

Charcoal Disposal Rules

If you chose to use a charcoal grill, this is the most critical safety step. MetLife Stadium has strict regulations regarding hot coals. You absolutely cannot dump them on the ground, and you cannot throw them into standard plastic trash bins (which will melt and start a massive fire). You must dispose of them in the designated, metal "Hot Coal Bins" scattered throughout the parking lots. Locate your nearest bin before you start grilling.

The Packing Timeline

  • Start 90 Minutes Early:

Do not wait until the last minute. Begin breaking down tables, collapsing canopy tents, and putting away games 90 minutes before kickoff. This gives you time to finish your last drink and secure the vehicle without rushing.

  • Bagging Your Trash:

Bring heavy-duty contractor trash bags. Clean your area completely. You can leave securely tied trash bags directly in your parking space; stadium cleanup crews will drive through the lots and collect them during the match.

  • Securing the Cooler:

Ensure your cooler is locked inside your trunk or out of sight in the back seat. While the lots are generally safe and patrolled by security, leaving high-end coolers or expensive equipment sitting openly in a truck bed is asking for trouble.

Remember that security lines at the stadium gates will be massive. The sooner you clean up your tailgate, the less stressful your entry into the stadium will be.
