Hostels and Budget Backpacking Options Near MetLife Stadium
New Jersey is not historically known for its backpacking or hostel culture. Unlike major European cities where you can easily find a 12-bed dormitory steps from the stadium, the Meadowlands is entirely dominated by corporate hotel chains. However, if you are a young fan traveling on an absolute shoestring budget, there are still ways to survive.
1. HI New York City Hostel (Manhattan)
If you truly want a traditional hostel experience (bunk beds, communal kitchens, organized pub crawls), you must stay in Manhattan. The Hostelling International (HI) location on the Upper West Side is massive, incredibly safe, and very cheap. You will need to take the subway to Penn Station and transfer to NJ Transit to reach MetLife, but the savings are immense.
2. Q4 Hotel & Hostel (Queens)
Located in Long Island City, Queens, this hostel offers excellent value and a slightly grittier, authentic NYC experience. It is located right on top of major subway lines. Your commute to the Meadowlands will be long (over an hour), but you will save hundreds of dollars a night compared to staying in a standard hotel.
3. The New Jersey "Motel Row" Strategy
If you refuse to stay in New York City, your only budget option in New Jersey is to find the oldest, most basic motels along Route 1 & 9 in towns like North Bergen or Ridgefield. These are not hostels, but if you split a single room with four friends, the per-person cost drops to hostel levels.
Backpacker Warnings
- No Camping:
Do not attempt to camp in the Meadowlands or sleep in your car in the stadium parking lots. State police will aggressively remove you.
- Late Night Transit:
If you stay in a Queens hostel, ensure you know exactly when the last train leaves MetLife Stadium, or you will be stranded in New Jersey.
