Where to Find the Best Roast Pork Sandwiches

Food & DiningUpdated: June 2026• 25 min read

While the cheesesteak is internationally famous, locals will quietly tell you that the true, superior Philadelphia sandwich is the Roast Pork. It consists of thinly sliced, heavily garlicky slow-roasted pork, sharp provolone cheese, and bitter broccoli rabe, served on a crusty seeded roll. It is a masterpiece of balancing fat, acid, and bitterness.

The Champion: Tommy DiNic's

Reading Terminal Legend

Tommy DiNic's inside the Reading Terminal Market serves what many consider the absolute best roast pork sandwich in the world. The pork is incredibly tender, the provolone is sharp enough to cut through the fat, and the broccoli rabe adds the perfect bitter crunch.

The Heavyweight: John's Roast Pork

A South Philly Institution

John's Roast Pork is a tiny shack in South Philly that commands massive lines. Their roast pork sandwich is incredibly juicy, deeply savory, and absolutely massive. They close by the early afternoon, so you must get there for an early lunch.

The South Philly Standard: Tony and Nick's

Under the Highway

Tony and Nick's Steaks (formerly Tony Luke's) is famous for their cheesesteaks, but their Roast Pork Italian is heavily underrated. The bread is flawless, and it is located conveniently close to the stadium complex.

The Neighborhood Gem: Paesano's

The 'Arista'

Paesano's (originally in the Italian Market) offers highly creative, chef-driven Italian sandwiches. Their version of the roast pork, called the 'Arista', features whole roasted suckling pig, incredibly sharp provolone, and fiery long hot peppers.

The Crucial Ingredient

Broccoli Rabe

Do not order a roast pork sandwich plain. You must order it with either spinach or broccoli rabe. We highly recommend the broccoli rabe. Its aggressive bitterness perfectly balances the massive amount of rich, salty pork fat.

World Cup 2026 Philadelphia Tips

Lincoln Financial Field is located in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex. Unlike many other NFL stadiums, the Linc is highly accessible via public transit. You must take the SEPTA Broad Street Line (the orange line) south to NRG Station. It drops you off literally steps from the stadium. Do not attempt to drive or take an Uber to the stadium on matchday; the traffic on Broad Street and I-95 will be catastrophic.
