Best Pretzels and Water Ice in Philly

Food & DiningUpdated: June 2026• 25 min read

There are two snacks that define the Philadelphia summer: the soft pretzel and Water Ice (pronounced 'Wooder Ice'). The Philly soft pretzel is distinctly different from others—it is usually baked in a figure-eight shape, served slightly squished together, and must be eaten with spicy brown mustard. Water Ice is a finely shaved, heavily flavored Italian ice that is mandatory survival gear in July.

The Pretzel Legend: Center City Pretzel

Fresh at Midnight

Center City Pretzel Co. on Washington Ave is a wholesale bakery that famously opens its doors to the public at midnight. People line up in the middle of the night to buy massive bags of pretzels while they are still burning hot from the oven. It is incredible.

The Everyday Standard: Philly Pretzel Factory

Hot and Salty

While it is a chain, Philly Pretzel Factory is reliable, incredibly cheap, and ubiquitous. You will find them everywhere. Always buy the 'Hot Outta the Oven' pretzels and heavily apply their signature spicy brown mustard.

The Water Ice King: John's

The South Philly Standard

John's Water Ice is arguably the most respected water ice stand in the city. They use real fruit chunks and achieve a perfectly smooth, snow-like texture. The lemon and cherry flavors are classic, but their chocolate water ice is surprisingly incredible.

The Neighborhood Gem: D'Emilio's

Old World Treats

D'Emilio's Old World Ice Treats in South Philly elevates the classic water ice concept. They use highly creative, locally sourced ingredients to make incredibly sophisticated flavors. They also serve fantastic soft serve ice cream.

The Local Combo

The Gelati

If you want the ultimate Philadelphia summer dessert, go to a Rita's Water Ice and order a 'Gelati'. It is a layering of frozen water ice and rich vanilla soft serve ice cream. The combination of textures is absolutely fantastic.

World Cup 2026 Philadelphia Tips

Lincoln Financial Field is located in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex. Unlike many other NFL stadiums, the Linc is highly accessible via public transit. You must take the SEPTA Broad Street Line (the orange line) south to NRG Station. It drops you off literally steps from the stadium. Do not attempt to drive or take an Uber to the stadium on matchday; the traffic on Broad Street and I-95 will be catastrophic.
