Classic Southern Comfort Food in DFW

Food & DiningUpdated: June 2026• 25 min read

Dallas is geographically positioned where the American South meets the West. While steak and Tex-Mex dominate, there is a deep, rich tradition of heavy Southern comfort food in the city. If you want massive portions of fried chicken, buttery biscuits, and collard greens, DFW has incredible options.

The Legend: Babe's Chicken

Family Style Excellence

With multiple locations around DFW (including Arlington), Babe's Chicken Dinner House is a regional treasure. The menu is simple: you pick a meat (fried chicken, chicken fried steak, or catfish). It is served family-style with endless bowls of mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, and incredible biscuits. You will need a nap afterward.

The Upscale South: Sissy's

Fried Chicken and Champagne

If you want a more refined, elegant take on Southern food, Sissy's Southern Kitchen on Henderson Avenue is fantastic. They serve their incredibly crispy fried chicken in beautiful buckets, and it is highly recommended to pair it with a bottle of champagne from their extensive list.

The Soul Food Spot: Sweet Georgia Brown

Massive Cafeteria Lines

Located in South Dallas, Sweet Georgia Brown is an absolute institution. The cafeteria-style line moves quickly, and the portions are staggeringly massive. Order the smothered pork chops, massive scoops of mac and cheese, and their legendary peach cobbler.

The Chicken Fried Steak: Norma's Cafe

The Texas Diner

Norma's Cafe is a classic Texas diner with several locations. You go here for one reason: the massive, plate-sized Chicken Fried Steak, absolutely buried in thick, white cream gravy. It is the ultimate, heavy Texas comfort food.

The Weather Note

Heavy Food, Hot Days

Southern comfort food is incredibly heavy and calorically dense. Do not eat a massive plate of chicken fried steak and gravy immediately before walking a mile across the massive, unshaded concrete parking lots at AT&T Stadium in the 100-degree Texas heat. Plan this meal for the evening.

World Cup 2026 Dallas Tips

The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is staggeringly massive. AT&T Stadium is located in Arlington, which sits directly between Dallas and Fort Worth. Arlington has zero public rail transportation. You will absolutely need to rent a car or rely heavily on expensive rideshares to get to the stadium. If you rely on Uber after a match, expect to wait over an hour in intense heat while surge pricing multiplies your fare.
