Best Tacos in Dallas: A Fan's Guide

Food & DiningUpdated: June 2026• 25 min read

While Tex-Mex (heavy on cheese and chili sauce) dominates the massive sit-down restaurants, Dallas has an incredibly vibrant, highly authentic street taco scene. From late-night trompos (vertical spits) spinning al pastor to modern, chef-driven taco concepts, the taco culture here is massive, cheap, and incredible.

The Late Night King: Trompo

The Vertical Spit

Trompo (originally in Oak Cliff) gained national fame for doing one thing perfectly: tacos al pastor. The pork is marinated, stacked on a massive vertical spit (the trompo), and sliced to order onto small corn tortillas with pineapple. It is the perfect, fast, authentic street taco.

The Modern Concept: Velvet Taco

Global Flavors

Velvet Taco is a massively popular local chain that treats the tortilla as a canvas for global flavors. These are not traditional Mexican tacos. Expect massive, messy creations like the Spicy Tikka Chicken taco or the Cuban Pig. They are open very late and are incredibly satisfying.

The Gas Station Gem: Fuel City

Open 24 Hours

The original Fuel City near downtown Dallas is a massive gas station, car wash, and taco stand. Open 24 hours, the tiny window serves incredible, cheap tacos (the picadillo is fantastic). Grab your tacos and eat them on the trunk of your car while watching the chaotic late-night Dallas crowd.

The Breakfast Champion: Taco Joint

Migras and Queso

If you need a heavy breakfast before an early match, Taco Joint is fantastic. They serve massive, heavily loaded breakfast tacos. The 'Migas' taco (eggs scrambled with tortilla strips, jalapenos, and cheese) topped with a scoop of their famous queso is the perfect hangover cure.

The Salsa Warning

Respect the Heat

When you visit authentic taco stands (like Trompo or Fuel City), you will be given small containers of green and red salsa. In Texas, the green salsa is usually a creamy jalapeno blend that is significantly spicier than the red. Always test a drop before pouring it over your taco.

World Cup 2026 Dallas Tips

The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is staggeringly massive. AT&T Stadium is located in Arlington, which sits directly between Dallas and Fort Worth. Arlington has zero public rail transportation. You will absolutely need to rent a car or rely heavily on expensive rideshares to get to the stadium. If you rely on Uber after a match, expect to wait over an hour in intense heat while surge pricing multiplies your fare.
