Dining at Union Station: Historic Atmosphere

Food & DiningUpdated: June 2026• 25 min read

Union Station is one of Kansas City's most iconic architectural landmarks. Built in 1914, this massive Beaux-Arts railway station features an enormous 95-foot ceiling and a staggering Grand Hall. It is fully restored and serves as an Amtrak hub, museum center, and home to some incredibly atmospheric dining options. If you want to eat in a setting that feels historic and grand, this is the spot.

The High-End Classic: Pierpont's

Steaks and Seafood

Pierpont's at Union Station is breathtaking. The restaurant features a massive, multi-story mahogany bar and towering ceilings. It is the premier location in Kansas City for classic steak and seafood. The atmosphere feels like a scene from the 1920s. It is expensive, elegant, and flawless.

The Casual Option: Harvey's

Brunch in the Grand Hall

Located directly in the open Grand Hall of Union Station, Harvey's offers a much more casual experience. It is fantastic for breakfast or a light lunch. You sit at tables right in the massive concourse, making it the perfect place for people-watching.

The Coffee Stop: Parisi

Espresso Before the Train

If you are catching an Amtrak train or simply touring the station, stop by Parisi Coffee. They offer excellent, locally roasted Italian-style espresso drinks and pastries right in the main lobby.

The Surrounding Area

Crown Center and Freight House

Union Station is connected via a skywalk to Crown Center (a massive shopping and hotel complex with its own restaurants) and is a five-minute walk from the Freight House (home to Lidia's and Jack Stack BBQ). The entire area is a culinary powerhouse.

The Transit Hub

The KC Streetcar

Union Station is the southern terminus of the free KC Streetcar. This makes it incredibly easy to reach. You can start your evening with drinks at Pierpont's, hop on the streetcar, and be in the Power & Light District or the River Market in minutes without ever needing a car.

World Cup 2026 Kansas City Tips

Kansas City is spread out and lacks a comprehensive, city-wide rail system. You will likely need to rent a car or rely heavily on rideshares. Arrowhead Stadium is located at the Truman Sports Complex, which is a significant drive from the downtown hotel districts. Always plan for massive traffic delays on Interstate 70 when traveling to the stadium on matchdays, and embrace the local tailgating culture!
